Our top 10 list of overlooked spots to clean and refresh before Summer.

Spring is finally here in YEG, just in time for… Summer!? Whether you’ve already tackled your big Spring clean, or haven’t lifted a dust rag since February - We promise you, there’s still time!
Here’s our no-pressure, high-impact list of ten Spring cleaning tasks that tend to get missed - but feel OH so good once they’re done. These aren’t your scrub-the-baseboards kind of tips - These are little upgrades, overlooked zones, and satisfying resets that make your space feel fresh and brighter without turning your weekend upside down.
Ready to SPRING into action? (Sorry, not sorry)
Start with…
1. Dusting your Ceiling Fans & Changing the Spin Direction

When the warm weather hits, it’s easy to flip on the ceiling fans without a thought - and effectively recirculate a layer of winter dust and debris through the whole room.
Avoid the cleanup by quickly dusting the edges and tops of the blades (and any other nooks or crannies) on the fan beforehand. While you’re up there, go ahead and switch the blades to spin counterclockwise. That’ll push the cool air down and help keep things breezy all summer.
Tool Tip: Use an extendable microfiber duster to safely reach and trap dust without it falling all over your space. We love: Ettore MicroSwipe Ceiling Fan Duster
2. Give your Furnace and Air Systems a Refresh

Spring is all about fresh air - but you’re not really breathing easy if your furnace fan is still cycling through the same filter that saw you through a sealed-up winter.
Start by swapping out your furnace filter (if using a reusable filter, wash it out with warm soapy water and a little cleaning vinegar). Then vacuum out your vents and vent covers to clear any leftover dust. While you’re at it, give your humidifiers, diffusers, or air purifiers a good clean and descale. It’s a full reset for the air moving through your home.
Tool Tip: Keep a spare furnace filter on hand so you can swap it out quickly when needed - This is a game-changer during forest fire season, when air quality can dip suddenly.
3. Give your Dryer Exhaust a Blowout

We all love the idea of clothesline-fresh laundry - but let’s be real, most of us are still hitting ‘start’ on the dryer.
If you want that fresh-spring-scent moment, your machine needs to be able to breathe. Built-up lint in your exhaust vent doesn’t just slow down drying time - it can trap stale air and dull the scent of every load (Plus, it’s a major fire risk). Take a few minutes to clear it out and let your dryer do its job like it’s brand new.
Tool Tip: Team up - one person holds a leaf blower to the exterior vent while the other catches the burst of lint inside with a garbage bag. It’s weirdly satisfying.
Maid Easy Cleaning Tip: Save that lint! Store it in a sealed ziploc bag, and pull it out to use as an excellent fire starter for summer bonfires or camping trips.
4. Check Up on Your Lighting

You don’t realize how dusty your lighting is until you finally clean it - and then suddenly your whole room feels brighter and cheerier.
Go room by room and check each light source; replace any burnt-out bulbs and gently wipe down the fixtures while you're at it. A clean light source can shift the entire energy of a space.
Maid Easy Cleaning Top Tip: Try dabbing a little essential oil (like lemongrass, lilac or peony) on your bulbs once they’re clean and dry. When you turn the lights on, the warmth off the bulb will gently diffuse a fresh spring scent throughout the room. Just make sure the oil’s fully dry before switching anything on!
5. Wash your Window Screens

You might’ve tackled the windows - but have you looked at the screens? They collect more than just dust: think pollen, grit, cooking grease, and even lingering smells from winter. A quick rinse won’t cut it. Use an eco-friendly degreasing cleaner and a soft brush to scrub each screen, then rinse and let dry in the sun.
Maid Easy Cleaning Tip: If you’re short on outdoor space, bring the screens to your bathtub. Lay down a towel or large rag first to protect the tub surface, then use a handheld showerhead to rinse and clean with ease.
Tool Tip: A plant-based degreasing spray, plus a soft-bristle brush will get the job done right without damaging the mesh. We love: Method Lemongrass Degreaser
6. Perform a Safety Station Sweep

They do nothing for most of the year - but when you need them, you really need them.
Spring is a great time to dust, wipe and test your fire alarms, carbon monoxide detectors, and thermostats. Press the “test” button to make sure they’re working properly, check the expiration dates (yes, they have them!), and swap in fresh batteries if it’s been a while.
A clean, working safety system brings peace of mind - and that’s what spring should feel like.
Maid Easy Cleaning Tip: Use a can of compressed air to gently blow out dust from vents and sensors without damaging the components.
7. Go in on a Trash Bin Deep-Clean

As soon as the weather warms up, your bins start to talk - and not in a good way.
Food scraps, spills, and mystery grime that didn’t bother you in winter suddenly hit different in spring. Drag your indoor and outdoor bins outside, give them a soapy scrub - then rinse well and let them air dry before adding a fresh garbage bag.
Want bonus freshness? Sprinkle a little baking soda in the bottom or spritz with vinegar and lemon essential oil before lining them again. Clean bin, clean conscience.
Tool Tip: A long-handled brush and a pair of dish gloves make this job way less gross - and a citrus-scented castile soap goes a long way.
8. Reset your Foyer/Entryway

Your entryway sets the tone - for both your guests and your family.
Start by shaking out or steam-cleaning rugs, wiping down doors, and swapping heavy boots and winter gear for lighter spring options. Refresh the space with a new scent: swap out diffuser sticks or add a small vase of cut herbs or flowers to bring that spring feeling right to the threshold.
Maid Easy Cleaning Tip: When storing Winter gear, pack it with a cloth sprayed in pine, clove, or cedar - so when autumn rolls back around, it brings that cozy feeling with it straight out of the bin.
Tool Tip: A handheld steam cleaner is perfect for rugs and floor mats, and a simple reed diffuser at the door goes a long way.
9. Clean your Cleaners

Your tools show up for you every time - so now’s their turn for a little care.
Empty your vacuum canister, clean or replace the filters, and check for any blockages in hoses or rollers. Pull out the hair, dust, and debris that gets wrapped up in the brush heads. Soak mop heads in a mix of hot water and vinegar, then air dry.
Even your broom benefits from a little rinse and a toothbrush scrub. When your tools are fresh, your whole routine works better.
Tool Tip: Use a seam ripper or letter opener to safely cut tangled hair from vacuum rollers - it’s faster and gentler than scissors.
10. Swap your Seasonal Sensories

Once your home is clean, let it feel like spring. Scent is one of the fastest ways to shift mood and mark a seasonal change.
Swap out winter’s warm, heavy notes for bright citrus, green herbs, or soft florals - think lemon, basil, lilac, peony and rosemary. Update your all-purpose cleaner, hand soap, dish soap, candles, diffusers, or even your linen spray to match.
Want a weekend reset? Simmer lemon slices and rosemary on the stove to fill the house with fresh energy. Let scent be the final layer of your spring refresh.
Tool Tip: Keep a small tray or basket with seasonal candles, oils, or sprays - ready to rotate with the calendar and shift the whole mood in one easy swap. We love: ATTITUDE Thyme and Citrus All-Purpose Cleaner
These ten little tasks may not be the first things on your spring cleaning checklist - but they pack a mighty punch. Small shifts like these can clear out stale energy, refresh your space, and help you step into summer with a lighter, brighter home.
They’re proof that a little intention (and elbow grease) go a long way.
